laundry detergent powder

I like a bargain (who'd have guessed!) and I also like ways of making the planet better. I purchased a front loading washing machine just over a year ago for that very reason because it saves on water/power consumption.

I used to make my own laundry goop* when I used a top loading machine, but I wasn't sure about putting that in my new "precious" machine. Then a friend put me on to homemade laundry powder. It's amazing, you only need to use a heaped spoonful of powder per wash. It's so easy to make (if you have a good food processor!) and it's super economical.

Here's the recipe I use:
1 bar sunlight pure soap
1/4 cup borax
1 cup washing soda

1. Process all the ingredients with the blade in your food processor.
2. Store in an airtight container (I use a jam jar).
3. Use one heaped dessert spoonful for each load.

* my name for homemade laundry liquid, cos it comes out the consistency of honey, all goopy!

I love this post!!! I'm also a huge believer in trying to make my imprint on the plantet as minimal as possible... I'd love to make a batch of your washing 'goop' up. I know what sunlight soap and borax is but what is washing soda??? Is it just your regular washing detergent??

Washing soda can be found in the cleaning aisle of your local supermarket - possibly near the sunlight soap?!

It looks like crystals and acts as a water softener (I think)

Okay this looks good - I had looked for one that would work in a front loader. What if you don't have a food processer? Do I grate the soap?

Yes, grating would work. You wouldn't get such a powdery result, but it would still be okay.

Be careful about big pieces of soap cos' they could actually get in your laundry, and then you'd have to re-wash it.

This stuff is great for front-loaders because it doesn't suds up.
