knitting loom; my first adventures with a loom

Yesterday, I decided to check out Spotlight's latest sale. What fun, I thought!!! :)

I managed to pick up a set of knitting loom's (4) for the cheap price of $16.95 and a whole heap of fabric remnants.

I spent today sussing out what to do with a loom, which is rather like an oversized french-knitter. My first project is a hat - yes, I do realise it's summer right now! But, my thought is that if I get bored it might be done by winter - hehehe!

The remnants will be used to make up some bib's for some new babies about to arrive in the next couple of months.

Reversible half apron - with pockets

Yesterday, I realised that I needed an apron in the kitchen whilst making messy hamburger patties from scratch. I like being able to wipe my hands which gets somewhat messy!

So this afternoon I found myself making one. I didn't want one with a bib, cos' it's just too hot here at the moment.

I ended up making two - not that I need two, but I used an old favourite denim skirt, and front and back had enough fabric for two!

Here are some basic instructions of what I did;

1. I chose cool vintage paisley fabric to go with the denim skirt. Using the shape of my skirt (which was an A frame) as a guide to the shape of my apron, I cut the paisley fabric to the same shape.

2. I sewed the 2 fabrics right sides together, leaving top open, and then pulling it right side out.

3. I then made the ties out of the paisley fabric (think long skinny length of fabric sewn together) and sewed it to the top of apron.

4. My next thought was that it needed pockets, somewhere to hang the tea towel or put the oven glove, and so I made a huge pocket sewing it in the middle to make two pockets.

And here we have it, modeled by my lovely 11 year old daughter!

Isn't it great when you re-discover things you had in your stash all along....

All this in one old bag I found in my fabric drawers. There is more in there, lot's of vintage buttons and some bias-binding and ribbon!

The BEST Chrissy Pressie's ever...

This year, as with most, my hubby surprised me with some great presents.

I shouldn't be so surprised, especially after 13 years of this, but I always pleasantly am.





We ordered these books 6 weeks before Christmas, and I just assumed they would arrive after. They arrived the day before we left for Whakatane, and Jonathan sneaked them away and listened to me complain for a week about them not arriving - grrrrr! Quite funny really, and I know it's not a secret I could've kept, had it been the other way around.

I am one lucky woman, and I guess this gives me permission to spend hours making more softies than I know what to do with! The best buy in my opinion is... Plush You! It's full of ideas to borrow. I love the way Sock and Glove is written, and my 7 year old spent many hours poring over the pages!
