That's right today, the 6th of December, is St. Nick's Day or "Saint Knickerless" day as we like to call it in our house... ;) Just a pun, of course!!!!
Anyway, for the past 3 or so years we've celebrated this day by eating chocolate coins in honour of the man for whom so much praise is given on Christmas Day. As Christians we decided early on, that we didn't want our children to get too mixed up about the real reason for the day, and so have chosen to celebrate "Santa Claus" on December 6th. It's great fun, we read a story about the man who the day is named after, eat chocolate and begin in earnest our Christmas countdown. :)
Today, we also got to have fun at Christmas Town, an event that our church hold's yearly for local children (and their parents...). Our church building is taken over by a cardboard township and lots of fun activities are found inside! Our family has been in charge of decorating the entrance way, and we all had fun last night hanging silver baubles from the ceiling and practising our wallpapering skills by hanging silver wrapping paper on the walls. It looked a little crazy mirrorish, but the kid's really seemed to enjoy it - which of course, is the whole point to it all! :D
So, especially as I'm enjoying the puns tonight -
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"
that is such a great idea as I have been struggling to explain the santa claus thing to my too and how on earth it ha something to do with Jesus birth!!! Thanks for the example
ReplyDeleteIt's very interesting how this Santa and all became, I have a 8 yr old at home and she knows pretty much about that Christmas day is the birthday of Jesus but not much about how Santa is mixed all in I will have to research today and do some reading to her every day so we can learn together. But mostly She knows that Christmas is about giving, and not just wrapped presents of giving of yourself in anyway you can. She will tell you that if you ask. God Bless Marion
